3 Day Rwanda Tour
This is one of the most popular safari packages in Rwanda. It should be noted noted, mountain gorillas are one of the most endangered specie of primates in the world, with only 880 individuals left in the whole world! This is according to the 2011 gorilla census. This world’s last remaining population of mountain gorillas is found in East and Central Africa, in the Virunga ranges, a chain of volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo! These are the only countries in the world where you can see gorillas in the wild! Leave alone the gorillas you see in zoos, these are in their natural habitat.
In Uganda, mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Parks, in Rwanda, gorillas are found in Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc National des Volcans, while in DR Congo, mountain gorillas are found in the magnificent Virunga National Park! However, Gorilla tourism in DR Congo is less developed due to some political instabilities but this situation ended and Virunga national park as well as Nyiragongo Volcano were re-opened!
Our case study today is Rwanda and we are looking at the 3 day Rwanda gorilla safari adventure to Volcanoes National Park. The park is located less than 2 hours drive from Kigali International Airport in Rwanda. This makes Rwanda popular for gorilla safaris compared to Uganda where you must drive for more than 9 hours from Entebbe International Airport to bwindi or Mgahinga National park.
The 3 day Rwanda gorilla safari prices are determined by type of car to be used, number of people and type of accommodation; Cars vary, people use Toyota Rav 4, Prado 3.0 Liter, Prado TX/TZ, Land Rovers and Super Customs among others. The higher the number of people, the cheaper the price of the gorilla safari. Accommodation is classified into Budget / basic, Deluxe / Mid Range and Luxury / High-End. The 3 day gorilla safari prices in Rwanda start from US$1250 per person based on 2 persons including private transportation in a 4×4 prado, 1 gorilla permit per person (US$750 each), 2 night accommodation and meals, and a full time English speaking tour guide. On Uganda side, a 3 day gorilla safari cost can go as low as US$1100 per person including a gorilla permit of US$600 per person. Rav 4 are mainly used by tourists on self drive trips and single travelers.
The 3 day gorilla trip in Rwanda offers an opportunity to visit Gisozi genocide memorial museum in Kigali, visit local art and craft shops in Kigali, local markets and many more especially in Day one. You can be picked from Kigali Airport on arrival, or from your hotel around Kigali city.
Among the accommodation options in and around Volcanoes gorilla park include Muhabura hotel, Kinigi guest house, Hotel la palme, Mountain gorilla view lodge, Gorilla Nest Lodge, Virunga lodge, Gorillas Hotel, Sabyinyo Silverback lodge, etc.
Day 2 starts early with heavy breakfast and drive to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla tracking! While on the trek, expect an encounter with other primates like colobus monkeys, golden monkeys and forest Elephants among others. The trek takes between 2 and 8 hours! This depends on how gorillas move in their natural environment! You will allowed to stay with the gorillas for one hour, take photos and videos. You are reminded to keep a distance of 7 meters from gorillas. Enjoy them feeding and young ones playing and swinging on trees.
Return to your lodge for full lunch, relax in the evening. You can choose to take a nature walk in the evening to nearby communities, Musanze local market or Iby’Iwacu cultural Village, or tour around the beautiful Twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, enjoy a canoe ride on this calm water. Dinner and overnight at your lodge as on day 1.
Day 3 is reserved for departure. Activities on this day are determined by departure flight schedule. That is to say, if your departure flight is before 2pm (14:00hrs), we can not do any activity because you must report to the airport by 12:00pm and it takes about 2 hours to drive from the park.
Then if the flight is after 5 pm, we can have a second gorilla trek with a nearby gorilla family so that we return by 11am or 12pm and drive to the airport, or go golden monkey tracking or hike to dian fossey tombs or Musanze caves exploration or Mt. Bishoke hiking.
If you are to take a second gorilla trek, you must secure the second gorilla permit advance through Safari companies, or through Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Contact African Jungle Adventures for more information about Gorilla safaris in Rwanda.
